Hot Picks for the Week!
QUICK REVIEWS FOR COMICS DUE 09-20-06
    By John Judy

ASTONISHING X-MEN #17 by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday. Admit it: We’re all just waiting for Wolverine to snap out of it and start killing everyone. And who is the White Queen, really?

BIRDS OF PREY #98 by Gail Simone and James Raiz. Meet the new Batgirl, same as the old Batgirl. She “mite” seem familiar…

BLADE #1 by Marc Guggenheim and Howard Chaykin. Okay, Chaykin’s drawing vampires again and so far none of them have the more memorable attributes featured in his earlier “Black Kiss.” Guggenheim gives us lots of action and a Dracula guest-appearance. Now hopefully we won’t be seeing the title character burned down to his adamantium skeleton and regenerating as we have in certain other Guggenheim titles.

CATWOMAN #59 by Will Pfeifer and the Lopez Brothers. Selina suits up as the Film Freak kicks it into high gear. Great issue for movie geeks and people who want to know who baby Helena’s daddy is.

CIVIL WAR #4 of 7 by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven. Somebody dies and somebody switches sides. Just another tricky day in the Marvel U.

DEADMAN #2 by Bruce Jones and John Watkiss. I hate to say it but this one might be growing on me. Provided you’re not looking for coherence or any relation at all to the original Deadman this may turn out to be a good story.

HELLBLAZER #224 by Denise Mina and Leonardo Manco. On the other hand Denise Mina has had her chance and now simply has to go, if for no other reason than sub-titling the latest installment in her on-going blah-fest “Chapter One.” If you need to have read every previous issue to have a clue what’s going on in a comic it doesn’t get to be sub-titled “Chapter One.” Paging Dr. Ennis…

INFINITE CRISIS HC by Geoff Johns and Phil Jimenez. The whole bloody thing in one book! Big fights, lotsa tears.

KRYPTO THE SUPER-DOG #1 of 6 by Jesse McCann and Min Ku. It’s a neat little all-ages title in the DC Adventures style and it has Streaky the Super-Cat, Ace the Bat-Hound and lots of other anthropomorphic fun. Kids will love it and if you leave a copy in a bear trap you can maim a Furry.

MOON KNIGHT #5 by Charlie Huston and David Finch. Okay, the story and dialogue are reminiscent of a “Spawn” mini-series but the art is pretty amazing. Too violent for the little ones but a guilty pleasure for those who enjoy Finch’s work on “New Avengers.”

NEXTWAVE: AGENTS OF H.A.T.E. #8 by Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen. Speaking of guilty pleasures, this one has the Mindless Ones, scenes from Elsa Bloodstone’s childhood, and the Captain doing something I’ve always wanted to see done to a flame-headed demon. It’s great! Recommended!

SHADOWPACT #5 by Bill Willingham and Steve Scott. It’s one year later and the ‘Pact takes a breath, shaves, and checks on their old hang-outs. Plus, there’s a new demon on the scene and Blue Devil gets screwed on his rent.

UNION JACK #1 of 4 by Christos Gage and Mike Perkins. Really nice art with surprisingly non-sucky story and characters. Worth a look, especially if you liked U-Jack’s recent appearance in “Captain America.”

WOLVERINE #46 by Marc Guggenheim and Humberto Ramos. Nowhere near as bad as “Wolverine: Origins” but it’s time to create a new drinking game. Everytime Wolverine could solve a multi-issue dilemma just by killing the bad guy in chapter one, you have to imbibe. Everytime Wolverine uncovers a nefarious plot, drink again. Everytime you see Wolverine just standing in silhouette, drink again. Within five pages this will seem like a pretty good comic.

X-FACTOR #11 by Peter David and Roy Allan Martinez. In the wake of Guido’s shocking revelation the Factor soldiers on against adversaries too numerous to list. Recommended.

X-MEN FIRST CLASS #1 of 8 by Jeff Parker and Roger Cruz. An inoffensive first chapter in a future trade paperback concerning the early adventures of Marvel’s Merriest Mutants. Nice cover by Marko Djurdjevic also available as a poster. Good for all ages.

Plus, a new softcover printing of FROM HELL by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell. Forget the Johnny Depp movie! This is a ripping great comic!
